Motoring

Before you learn to drive or ride a new vehicle make sure you know about the rules and restrictions that apply to you. Different vehicles have different minimum ages and restrictions.
The first step to take before learning to drive a car or a motorbike on a road is to obtain a learner licence for a car or motorbike. Learning to drive a car safely and efficiently in modern traffic involves much more than training to pass a government road test and get a licence.
Learning safe driving habits from the start will improve the safety of yourself and other road users. As a learner driver you must display 'L' plates in a conspicuous position on the front and rear of the vehicle you are driving.

Driver Responsibility

Legal alcohol limits for driving

The law says you must not drive if the amount of alcohol in your blood or breath exceeds certain age-related limits.
If you're under 20 years old, the legal alcohol limit is 30 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood, and 150 micrograms per litre of breath. This is effectively a zero limit – consuming one drink will mean you can be charged with drink driving.

If you're over 20, the legal alcohol limit is 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood and 400 micrograms per litre of breath.

You should have your licence with you at all times when you are driving. The law requires that you produce your licence to an enforcement officer when requested. The failure to do so may result in a fine.

The following documents should be carried while driving:

  1. Driving License
  2. Registration certificate
  3. Taxation Certificate
  4. P.U.C Certificate
  5. Insurance Certificate.
  6. Fitness Certificate and permit.

Defensive driving techniques

Being a good defensive driver means more than just being cautious. The driver must have space to maneuver and time to react.

Skills required to drive safely can be enlisted as follows:

  1. Good vision.
  2. Quick reactions.
  3. Good co-ordination.
  4. Marked ability to take decisions and judge the traffic conditions.

"Drowsiness" is lack of sleep or fatigue hampers the driving ability of the drivers. Drivers should take frequent intervals while driving, whilst taking coffee, exercise or nap.
